Programs

Chicago Rowing Union offers several programs for all rowing levels, with something for everyone. The Competitive program has separate practice times for men and women, while all other programs include both in the same practice. Practices are held at the Dammrich Rowing Center in Skokie, IL, located at 3220 W. Oakton Street (between McCormick Blvd and the Home Depot). Need a lift? There are options for car pools from various city neighborhoods.

  • Fall and Winter Indoor Training: Indoor training on ergs at the Dammrich Rowing Center. Workouts are intended for those with some training on the erg, whether or not you have experience rowing on the water. The goal of indoor training is fitness and conditioning.
  • Learn to Row: Sessions take place throughout the spring and summer. Each session consists of 8 classes, held on Saturday and Sunday mornings or Monday and Wednesday evenings. See specific times on our Learn To Row page.
  • Novice: Trains as a group on the Chicago River from June to late October on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  Novice rowers must first complete a Learn to Row program (with CRU or with another organization). If interested in joining, contact us for more details at membership@chicagorowingunion.org
  • Competitive: Trains as a group on the Chicago River from April to late October on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (or evenings, for the PM program) and Saturday mornings. Individuals complete additional coach-prescribed workouts throughout the week on their own. Participation requirements include:
    * Having at least one full season of rowing experience
    * Attending at least 80% (9 of 12) of practices each month during the season
    * Exhibiting behavior and outlook consistent with CRU’s mission of inclusion, community, and teamwork
    * Completing all outside work-outs as prescribed by Competitive program coaches
  • Club: Trains as a group on the Chicago River from April to late October on Monday and Wednesday evenings. The Club program is for experienced rowers with a focus on fitness and technique rather than the Competitive program’s race-focused training. Racing opportunities are still available to Club program members. Program members have the option to race at various regattas throughout the season, but it is optional and more for the experience than winning. Participation requirements include:
    * Having at least one full season of rowing experience (All rowers returning from their CRU Novice Season will be placed in the Club Program)
    * Attending at least 80% (6 of 8) of practices each month during the season
    * Exhibiting behavior and outlook consistent with CRU’s mission of inclusion, community, and teamwork
